This is Architecture.

September 26, 2010

So, almost everyday of the week I’m walking passed this thing called the ‘Ottawa Convention Centre’. This is what it looked like a year ago. I was able to see Stephen Lewis speak here when I was in what I think was my first year of University.

Pretty Ugly.

They tore it down in order to build a new one.

Here it is on Canada day.

And a few weeks ago when the first windows were going in!

And what it should look like when it’s done.

It was designed by Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects and a neat tidbit about the windows is that no two windows are alike! All roughly 1, 100 panes of them are different sizes and have to be placed in their corresponding frame. I would always wonder why they’d have almost a whole section done and move on without putting in the last one or two windows. Well I guess it’s because it’s a giant puzzle! They also use state of the art suction cups for putting them in place. Yes, these things are interesting to me.

It looks amazingly different from every angle. It already reflects the water of the canal and the light hits every pane differently. I can’t wait for it to be finished. The windows need a good washing already but I’ll chalk it up to the fact that it’s still a construction zone.

You can read more about it on the CBC website and see more designs by BBB Architecture here.

“planned spontaneity or happenstance, is the sensation of expectation and anticipation… the result of form and space colliding yet co-existing… this is architecture” -BBB website.
