Apartment Therapy
Since I’m moving into a teenie bachelor I’ve been spending considerable time on the Apartment Therapy website to see how I can make my small space seem not so small. Or at least seem small and stylish.
This first space is only 350 square feet but she crams lots of style in without it seeming cluttered.
The owner of this next apartment chose an interesting layout by putting the bed where one might have put a dining table and opted to have an office space where the bedroom would have been. A great example of organizing a space to fit personal needs rather than convention.
Love the bay window.
Space number 3 has a more modern and open feel. The divider is used to separate the bedroom from the rest of the space. It feels more like a loft with the exposed pipe and beams.
Space number 4 is probably my favourite and it’s only 285 square feet! I’m going to have curtains separating my bedroom alcove from the living space like the photo below. My place will not look as grown up and cohesive as this apartment though! One day I will have matching furniture…
Finally space number 5 measures in at 290 square feet. The fridge is also in the living/bedroom/office space…
Office/fridge
Bedroom/livingroom
Clothes storage and tv stand.
Some bachelor/studio apartments are easier than others to define space and function. Those with alcoves can easily hang a curtain, use a divider or even leave the space open and make it feel organized and clearly defined. Others cannot be separated so easily and living space becomes a bedroom and the bedroom is an office and the office houses the refrigerator. It all seems a little unconventional especially living in North America where everyone has 2 refrigerators a spare bedroom and a 5 car garage (I may be exaggerating only slightly) but with intelligent use of space and good design a small apartment doesn’t need to feel closed in and suffocating. Lighting, scale, colour and smart storage can all make a huge difference in opening up a mere 300 square feet.

I love the idea of separating your bed from the rest of your space using a curtain. I think that’s something I will incorporate into my next house. It keeps things neat and elegant.
Apartment Therapy is a wonderful, wonderful site.
Keep updating!!
